Since its establishment in the late 1970s in Leeds, West Yorkshire, The Institute have been primarily concerned with research. That is, practice research that offers various modes of inquiry through making and doing. The initial phases of inquiry in the late 1970s and early 1980s consisted of rehearsing, playing live and recording as a post punk band with additional musicians drafted in, as and when required. The Institute decided to dispense with vocals and guitars unless they added new and interesting textures. For the purposes of recording their research activities, The Institute purchased one of the first four track audio cassette tape recorders and began filling four track tapes with sound. The Institute were not trained musicians but strove to find a way to make  music. The recordings presented here on Disc 1 were primarily recorded to cassette audio tape during rehearsals.
